What are some of the long term side effects of an underbite?


Those people who are suffering from severe underbites may feel a low sense of self-worth or self-esteem and sometimes feel social anxiety. This is all because of the misaligned teeth. According to experts, it has been found that an underbite can make a person appear so angry or supper made even when they are not. How your face looks can always be misunderstood due to having an underbite. On many occasions, an underbite will give people the impression that you are expressive a certain emotion that you did not even intend. Those people who suffer from an underbite are always affected by such and that makes their life very difficult. An underbite brings in a social issue that everyone would wish to eliminate for good. 

Apart from just interfering with your self-esteem, an underbite can interfere with your speech too. Speech development in children can be very difficult especially with an underbite. Certain sounds can only be performed perfectly fine with a correctly aligned jaw. For example, people who have an underbite will always struggle to make sounds such as ‘s’ and the ‘f’ sound. This is a very serious condition and can affect patients from excelling in schools and professionally as well. It is also a condition that can interfere with social interactions as well as relationships. When that happens, the person affected can feel loneliness and isolation. 

What are some of the physical impact of underbites

Apart from the social and personal impacts of underbites, an underbite can also cause some physical effects to the person affected. The physical conditions, effects, and impacts on underbites vary according to the severity of the condition. The age of the person affected is also to be considered. When you have an uneven bite, that means that your jaw will not function as it is supposed to. Because of that, there can be wear and tear. We all know that wear and tear and cause pain especially in joints and muscles as well. Apart from that, uneven jaws can cause difficulty in swallowing and chewing. Many people with an underbite experience difficulties when they are biting and chewing food. In severe cases, this can lead to weight loss as well as malnutrition. This is because patients can only afford to drink and not eat properly as eating will cause severe pain. Because of that, patients might have mental and physical difficulties. Those people with severe to moderate underbites have also reported cases of chronic headaches. Just like an overbite, an underbite can cause tooth grinding. This can cause headaches in the head and the face.

A person with an underbite can experience pain as well as the malfunctioning of the jaw. People who have an underbite are most likely to experience a temporomandibular. This is a condition that is caused by an underbite and it is very difficult to be corrected. This is because the temporomandibular joint is located at the base of the skull.
